Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital partners with Lemira Elementary School

Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, with the help of the Tuomey Foundation and Duke Energy, created an activity book for students called "Are You My Job?" The book features careers available in health care from A-Z and is designed to show students just how many jobs are required in a hospital.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, 11 team members representing a variety of hospital departments were on hand to unveil the coloring book — drawn by local artist Lexi Melton — to second-graders at our partner school, Lemira Elementary.

The goal of our partnership and the book is to educate, encourage and excite students about STEAM-related career choices. Today's event allowed students to talk to the team members and ask questions about various career paths.

The story behind this project.

Picture
After arriving at local elementary schools with only unsharpened pencils to hand out to eager children during a Career Fair, a team from Palmetto Health Tuomey brainstormed interesting but effective ways to tell kids about the many different types of jobs at the hospital.

They wanted children to see that a strong hospital system isn’t made up of just doctors and nurses but also people who build things, fix things, write reports, make decisions, clean the hospital and prepare food.

What better way to capture the interest of children than a cool activity book that introduces them to jobs that are forecasted to be waiting for them when they have grown up and are ready to join the workforce?

Through a generous donation from The Tuomey Foundation and Duke Energy, the team was able to bring their whimsical idea to fruition. They commissioned artist Lexi Melton, a graduate of the Sumter School District, to make the ABCs of Health care Careers kid-friendly. Activity books just like the one you’re reading now will be placed into the hands of children throughout our community.

Not only does our hospital hope that children will be inspired to learn more about jobs that will be available when they are adults, but we also hope that everyone will learn a little more about the integral roles that hospital team
members play in thriving communities.

About the illustrator

Lexi Melton loves to do a variety of things, including drawing, juggling and picking up bugs. She is scared of the mail carrier and hopes to one day get stuck on an elevator. Enjoy coloring!
